Pfftt!

I know this is a bit OCD, but I can't help myself getting a wee bittie annoyed.

In my laundry room, I have a system. Two systems actually.

System one is for the laundry. I have five laundry baskets, lined up in a row. One is for whites, one for reds, one for dark colours, one for light colours and the last for stuff that has just been folded and needs taken upstairs to be put away.

This is not difficult. Particularly as there is generally something sitting in each basket - I am rarely, if ever, completely up to date on my laundry.

But can people put the right colours in the right baskets. No. They can't.

The second system is for my recycling. One bin for cardboard, one for plastic bottles, one for tins, a bag for paper and another box for stuff that needs shredded.

You know what I'm gonna say, don't you. I'm not even going to grace that with a question mark, because it really is a statement.

Why can't folk sort things properly? How hard can it be??

  Ah, now, you see, you wouldn't get away with that here. I take each bit of laundry, check pockets, straighten out the scrunched up bits and then put it in the machine. One garment at a time. None of this 'shoving it all in' nonsense for me, matey! //Nothing// gets past me!

I know. Mini's mates still chuck plastic bottles in the green bin and it's bloody hard to get them back out again! (not to mention, smelly)

I have a system with three sections that are current and as soon as a section is cleared then another type of colour or wash type range fills the space.

Viz:

White & very lights.
Mixed neutral colours.
Black & midnight blues.
Red/orange/brownish-red & orange/purples of varying degrees.
Bedding.
Towels/bath mats.

There's not really any conflict with bedding and the towels etc. They are just a bit too obvious (I hope!)

Black; now you would think that's obvious so why do I find reds etc in with them or vice-versa? I can think of apt adjectives but I shall refrain.

Whites & Lights; this is where I breathe fire and brimstone. Mixed up with those are blacks and reds, not even the forgiveable slight error of mixed neutral colours - grrrr

Then sprog arrives home and that laundry always having been washed in close proximity whatever the colour,(and it shows) gets done the same way its used to being done, and it remains separate from the rest of mine. I dread to think what colours might spread into my other sorted laundry if I operated with the interloping laundry, the same as I do with the rest of my own.

You are not alone in your frustrations about I.Q. or is it laziness with bloody-mindedness thrown in for good measure?

    Enjoy filing - not sure about 'enoying' it. I see filing as necessary and I like a system that works, not just for me, but overall. I think what I have is logical for the purpose and it gets sorted at intervals. Sounds a bit like the washing, doesn't it
    
    It's the same with the computer, I have a very structured filing arrangement which proved its worth earlier this year when, hundreds of miles away, I had to explain over the phone, where to locate things (apart from teaching 'how to' with word processing and editing). The recent result is, that hubby has enlisted my assistance to tidy up his files into folders, though he doesn't have so much to concern himself with.

      I enjy filing. I like the order of it. I also count things and feel out of sorts if the number is odd.
      
      My husband is an excellent filing system creator, but rubbish at keeping to the system.

        I create and keep my systems. Hubby has a system I don't care for. He seems to have adopted the basics from my computer system though, since he saw how effectively my method worked when having to seek out information for me when I was some distance away.

    Don't know about 'enjoying' filing, it is something I do as a necessary household requirement. I like a system that is clear and works - something straightforward. It regularly gets sorted and filtered by age. I work with my computer the same way.
    
    The folder/file system I use on the computer was worth its simple weight in gold earlier this year, when hundreds of miles away, I had to describe how and where to locate stuff.
    
    I think on balance, I would say I require systems that work, which do so when I set them up, which only fail when some nitwit decides to override what I do, like with the colour coding for the washing.

You sound a bit like my mother! However she does not have OCD as her fridge was often full of out of date foods!!

Now I can put up with washing being higgledy piggledy but mould in the fridge....eeewww!

  I think minor OCD can be specific. Some things I can let slide and they don't bother me at all. Other things drive me nuts.

Isn't it annoying!!

How difficult is it to keep whites separate?

How difficult is it to keep dark colours seperate?

How difficult is it to keep black things separate?

To keep light colours separate?

To keep reds separate?

How difficult is it to have bedding and towels and other boil wash items ( I have to boil underwear or I don't feel clean - so who is OCD now?) separate?

Why don't they empty the fridge and check dates when putting new items in!!

Why oh why can't my family understand the bloody system it isn't that difficult!

What about a written card on top of the basket, written in a lovely, flowing style, stating what colour should go in it? If they don't get the hint, then resort to threatening messages or insults instead. E.g;
'Only red! (Or you make your own bed)'
'Whites only, or you will feel quite lonely!'

I have to admit that I have one laundry basket, but I do wash white things separately. Mr A does his own laundry often using the 'wash the whites together' method.
